Why was IELTS created?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) was created to give a fair and accurate assessment of English language proficiency.

Language experts from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States create the test questions. The test covers four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Selecting the Correct Test

IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are the two examinations available. The test you take should be tailored to your objectives.

IELTS Academic – determines if your English language proficiency is appropriate for an academic setting. It examines whether you’re ready to begin training or studying by reflecting characteristics of academic language.

IELTS General Training – assesses English language ability in a real-world setting. Both working and social circumstances are reflected in the tasks and tests.

You may need to take the IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Academic or General Training or the IELTS for Life Skills test to support a UK visa application to work, live, or study in the UK.
